Location, Languages, Dresses, Tribes, Industries, Dams & Lakes of Haripur Hazara


Location:
Haripur lies close to GT Road (Grand Trunk Road) or Karakuram Highway. The GT Road is also known as Shara-e-Resham because of import and export of Resham (Silk) with China.

Population and Area:
In 2005 the total estimated population of Haripur was 1 million. The total area of Haripur city is 1763 km2. Abbottabad and Mensehra Districts are thickly populated than other three Districts. Hazara division has 5 districts.

Language:
Most of the people speak Hindko. Hindko is mother tongue of Hazarewals, people of batgram speak Pushto, kohistan speak kohistani which is similar to pushto, mansehra,abbottabad and Haripur people speak Hindko. Other peoples of villages speak their own language which is similar to hindko.

Dresses:
Shalwar kameez is main dress of all the people. Male wear shalwar kameez and has a shawl of any color on their shoulder. Open or close leather chapal they usually wear. Males also wear waskot. People of batgram and kohistan also wear shalwar kameez, chapal and they tie their shawl on their heads like a hat. People of batgram also wear white cap as a riwaj of thier families.


Females wear shalwar kameez and dupatta of same colour. They wear chapals or sandles. Chooriyan are their favourit which they wear in match of their dress. Females of batgram and kohistan like mehndi (Hina) they make a circle in the palm and on finger tips. Their Jewellery contains bangles, necklace, rings, tops or ear rings etc. Male wear only rings.
Most of people wear white shalwar kameez on Friday as it is Muslims Holy day of they week.

Main tribes are:
Siyad,Awan,jadoon,gujar,rajpoot,abbasi,sheikh,durrani,turk,qureshi,malik,niazi,sawati,kashmiri,mughal,pathans of kala dhaka and to the opposite side of tarbela lake have nine tribes. Jadoon and tanoli tribes also belong to the opposite bank of tarbela lake.

Industries:
Haripur has an industrial area (Hattar). Hattar is known as industrial area. Telephone Industries of Pakistan (TiP) plays an important role in the economy of  haripur. Hundred of of industries reduces the poverty rate in haripur.


These industries contains food, medicines and goods manufacturing industries. Main industries are Cement industries, Steel mils, Oil and Ghee industries, Biscuits industries, Qarshi industries of Medicines and Drinks, Match box industries, Marble and Tiles, Plai woods,rubber and plastic industries, Chemicals industries,bricks and blocks making industries and furnaces, textile mills, khyber textile mill, terbela cotton mills, pakistan ordinance factory haveliyan.(POF), heavy mechanical complex (HMC).

Major Dams and Lakes:
Terbela Dam,Ghazi barotha and Khanpur Dam are three major Dams of haripur. Terbela Dam is the words largest dam naturally made of mud. Khanpur dam is also a huge dam, putri dam which is a small piece of area filled with water serves as a best place for visitors. Terbela lake is also a place for visitors. Ghazi barotha dam is also a major dam of hazara and is included in majod projects in haripur division. Khanpur, terbela and potri dams are best for fishes. Fishes of terbela dam are considered as very much delicious people far from pakistan come to eate haripur's fish. Tons of fishes are sold every day. Mangan and kalan dams also located in haripur. Terbela, Ghazi Barotha and khanpur dams are the main source of hydal power of pakistan. Basha Dam is underconstruction which will provid electricity in near future.

This is video of Meerpur dam. It is a little reservoir of water as compare to trbela dam, but it is a good place to visit specially at evening time. You will enjoy the visit. It comes in the way to Tip Road, turn toward the village Meerpur and then to meerpur jheel or dam. Villagers are very hospitable they will help you if you need they will guide you and will take you to the lake. It is open and green place with fresh air to breath.

This video is of DOR at chapar road haripur. this dor joins terbela jheel. The water of DOR comes from mountains of abbottabad and far from abbottabad. It come inside the mountains and small waterfall and streams meet it to make it wider and wider. and then it meets to terbela jheel during little or no rain fall people living beside dor cultivates seasonal crops like maize, wheat, and rice etc.

Most of people also cultivates wheat during its season. Wheat is cultivated in summer because water in the terbela lake is reduced to 4 or 5 Km down. People have share in that place so they provides the people of hazara with wheat. Because of lake the fields are very fertile.

Terbela lake is also a very good place of fishing and shooting. The main road of main bazar straight goes to the lake. The road is named as Terbela Road because of Terbela jheel
GT road>Main Bazar Road>Terbela Road>and then to Terbela lake.
The roads are clean and newly made in the year 2010 upto Lake. It is still under construction and soon before the end of 2010 will be completed.
